Liquidity

USUK
US/lɪkˈwɪdɪti/

The ease with which an asset can be converted to cash without significantly affecting its market price.

Definition

Liquidity refers to how quickly and easily an asset can be converted into cash at or near its fair market value. Cash is the most liquid asset; real estate is relatively illiquid. In financial markets, a liquid market has many buyers and sellers, narrow bid-ask spreads, and large trade volumes ”” enabling large transactions without significantly moving prices. Illiquid assets carry a liquidity premium (higher expected return) to compensate investors for the difficulty of selling. Liquidity risk is the risk of being unable to sell an asset quickly.

Example

“US Treasury bills are highly liquid ”” they can be sold in seconds on deep markets ”” while a commercial real estate property may take months to sell at fair value.”

Usage Examples
