Definition
A system of government where power derives from the people. Germany's Federal Republic (Bundesrepublik) has been Europe's most stable and prosperous democracy since 1949, after the lessons of Weimar democracy's failure and Nazi totalitarianism. Germany's 'militant democracy' provisions allow banning of parties threatening democratic order.
