hermeneutics
English meaning: Hermeneutics
English Definition
(English)Hermeneutics (from Hermes, messenger of the gods) is the art and science of interpretation. Schleiermacher extended it to all text interpretation; Dilthey applied it to the human sciences; Heidegger and Gadamer made it a fundamental mode of human being. The 'hermeneutic circle' — understanding the whole from parts and parts from the whole — captures the circular nature of all interpretation.
English Definition
The theory and methodology of interpretation, especially of texts, language, and symbolic expressions. Originally concerned with biblical exegesis, hermeneutics evolved into a general philosophical framework for understanding meaning in all human expression.
Example
“Constitutional interpretation is a hermeneutic exercise — judges must interpret founding texts written centuries ago for situations their authors could not have anticipated.”
