(日本語)神道とは、自然や祖先に宿る神（kami）を祀る日本固有の宗教である。開祖も聖典も持たず、祭礼・祭り・日本中に点在する8万以上の神社を通じて表現される。第二次世界大戦前は国家神道として天皇イデオロギー強化に利用された。現在も仏教と「神仏習合」として共存している。
English Definition
Japan's indigenous religion centered on the veneration of kami (spirits inhabiting nature and ancestors). Shinto has no founder or sacred scripture but is expressed through rituals, festivals, and the 80,000+ shrines across Japan. State Shinto was used to reinforce imperial ideology before WWII. Shinto and Buddhism coexist in Japanese practice (shinbutsu-shūgō).
