A long fictional narrative in prose. The Dutch novel tradition includes Multatuli's Max Havelaar (1860) — a landmark of world literature exposing colonial injustice — considered one of the most influential books ever written in Dutch. Modern Dutch novelists include Harry Mulisch, whose The Discovery of Heaven (1992) was voted the best Dutch novel of the 20th century. Dutch novels are widely translated internationally.
