Dutch medicine has an outstanding tradition — Herman Boerhaave (1668–1738) founded clinical teaching at the bedside (Leiden University), establishing modern medical education worldwide. Antonie van Leeuwenhoek invented the microscope (1674) and discovered bacteria and protozoa, founding microbiology. Dutch euthanasia law (2002) is the world's most studied end-of-life legislation.
