school

/school/Roman

English meaning: School

Dutch Definition

(Nederlands)

Een instelling waar kinderen systematisch onderwijs krijgen in kennis en vaardigheden.

English Definition

An institution for educating children. The Dutch school system is distinctive — primary school (basisschool, ages 4–12) followed by streaming into VMBO (vocational), HAVO (general), or VWO (pre-university). This streaming at age 12 is controversial but produces high educational outcomes. The Netherlands has a unique 'pillarization' (verzuiling) tradition of separate religious schools (Catholic, Protestant, Islamic) with public funding.

Example

Het Nederlandse onderwijsstelsel kent een vroege studiekeuzedifferentiatie op 12-jarige leeftijd.

In English: The Dutch education system features early tracking differentiation at age 12.
