The rational inquiry into fundamental questions. Brazil's most important philosopher, Paulo Freire, wrote 'Pedagogy of the Oppressed' (1968) — one of the most cited education books globally, arguing that education must develop critical consciousness (conscientização) to liberate the oppressed. Portugal's Fernando Pessoa (1888–1935) was a major modernist poet and philosopher of identity.
