Development that meets present needs without compromising future generations' ability to meet their own needs (Brundtland Report, 1987). Brazil hosted the 1992 Earth Summit (Rio ECO-92) that produced the Rio Declaration and Agenda 21 — foundational documents of global sustainable development. The 2030 Agenda's 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) build directly on these Rio commitments.
