Definition
The systematic study of the natural world. Russia/Soviet Union made extraordinary scientific achievements — Sputnik (world's first satellite, 1957), Yuri Gagarin (first human in space, 1961), Mendeleev's periodic table, Pavlov's conditioned reflexes, and the discovery of the Cherenkov radiation. Soviet science was state-funded and produced remarkable achievements in space, mathematics, and physics.
