hali ya hewa
English meaning: Climate
English Definition
The long-term pattern of weather in a region. Climate change is hitting East Africa hard — erratic rainfall threatening rain-fed agriculture (90% of East African farming), prolonged droughts (2022–23 Horn of Africa drought affected 36 million people), melting glaciers on Kilimanjaro and Rwenzori mountains, and rising sea levels threatening coastal cities. East Africa contributes little to global emissions but suffers disproportionately from climate impacts.
Example
In English: “Climate change harms East African agriculture though the continent contributes little to greenhouse emissions.”
