Definition
A system of human communication. Taiwan uses Traditional Chinese characters (as opposed to Simplified Chinese used in mainland China). Mandarin is the official language, but Taiwanese (Hokkien), Hakka, and 16 indigenous Austronesian languages are also spoken and protected under Taiwan's language preservation policies.
