Definition
An ancient network of trade routes connecting China to Central Asia, Persia, Arabia, and India. The Silk Road facilitated not only commerce in silk, spices, and gems but also the exchange of religions (Buddhism, Islam), arts, and technologies. China's modern Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is often called the New Silk Road.
