5-volume Sanskrit fable book by Pandit Vishnu Sharma ~200 BCE-200 CE; commissioned by King Amarasakti to teach 3 dull princes practical wisdom in 6 months. Frame story: Vishnu Sharma promised to teach princes; used animal fables (lions, monkeys, jackals, crows, mice) to illustrate political/practical wisdom. Princes learnt + became wise rulers! 5 Tantras (Books): (1) Mitra-Bhedha (Loss of Friends) — example: Lion + Bull friendship destroyed by jackal Damanaka; (2) Mitra-Lābha (Gaining Friends)Crow+Tortoise+Mouse+Deer cooperation; (3) Kakolukiyam (Crows + Owls war) — strategy in conflict; (4) Labdhapraṇāśam (Loss of Gains) — examples include Monkey + Crocodile (banana tree pulls heart); (5) Apariksitakarakam (Rash Actions)Brahmin + Mongoose (parents kill mongoose mistakenly thinking it killed baby; baby alive, mongoose killed cobra). Famous fables: Lion + Hare (clever escape), Wolf + Crane (ungrateful king), Crow + Snake (clever revenge), Tortoise + Two Geese (don't talk during flying), Monkey + Crocodile, Rabbit + Lion (mirror trick). Day 2 — **Monkey + Crocodile**: monkey on banana tree gave fruits to crocodile; crocodile's wife wanted monkey heart; crocodile invited monkey; monkey realized; said "heart left on tree, must go back"; escaped. Day 3 — **Brahmin + Mongoose**: parents left baby with pet mongoose; came back saw blood-stained mongoose; assumed baby killed; **killed mongoose**; then found baby alive + dead cobra mongoose actually saved!
