Counting & calculation — the everyday math that lets us shop, save, plan, build. From Vedic Math's lightning-fast tricks to modern calculators, abacus, and India's gift of zero — the foundation of all arithmetic.

Counting basics

Most ancient human skill. Fingers (10) → tally marks → number systems. India's decimal system (base 10) globally adopted. Aryabhata 5th century introduced place value + zero (0). Combination revolutionised math.

4 operations

1) కూడడం (+) — addition. 7 apples + 3 = 10. 2) తీయడం (−) — subtraction. 10 - 4 = 6. 3) గుణించడం (×) — multiplication. 6 × 3 = 18. 4) భాగించడం (÷) — division. 24 ÷ 4 = 6. Order of operations — BODMAS: Brackets, Orders (powers), Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction.

Multiplication tables (ఎక్కాలు)

1×1 to 20×20 — every Telugu child should master. Tables 2-5 — addition repeated. Tables 6-9 — pattern tricks. Table 10 — add zero. Table 11 — repeat digit (11×9=99 wait, 11×9=99). Table 9 trick — fingers method (9×7: bend 7th finger; 6 left, 3 right = 63).

Vedic Math (16 sutras)

Ancient Indian mental math. Swami Bharati Krishna Tirtha 1884-1960 deciphered from Athrarva Veda. Faster than calculators:

1) Ekadhikena Purvena — "by one more than the previous." 25² → 2 × (2+1) = 6, then ²5 = 25. Result 625. 75² = 7×8 = 56, ²5 = 25. 5625!

2) Nikhilam Navatashcaramam Dashatah — "all from 9 and last from 10." 999 × 994 = ? 999 deficiency 1; 994 deficiency 6. Subtract one from another's deficiency: 999-6 = 993; multiply deficiencies: 1×6 = 06. Answer 993006! Brain in 3 seconds.

3) Urdhva Tiryagbhyam — "vertically and crosswise." 23 × 47 = ? - 2*4=8 (hundreds); - 2*7 + 3*4 = 14+12=26 (tens; carry 2 to hundreds = 10); - 3*7 = 21 (ones; carry 2 to tens = 8). - Result: 1081.

4) Antyayor Dasake 'pi — "when last digits sum to 10 and previous parts identical." 47 × 43 = ? 4 × (4+1) = 20; 7×3 = 21. 2021.

Modern calculators

1) Abacus — 3000 BCE; pearls. 2) Mechanical — Pascal, Babbage. 3) Electronic — 1970s; HP, Casio, Texas Instruments. 4) Smartphone calculators — every phone. 5) AI calculators — Wolfram Alpha, ChatGPT. Vedic Math races calculator for 2-digit math.

Mental math champions

1) శకుంతలా దేవి (1929-2013) — "Human Computer." 13-digit numbers multiplied mental in 28 seconds (1980 Imperial College London record). Cube roots, square roots instant. Guinness Book.

Daily counting

1) Shopping — total bill, change, GST 18%. ₹500 item + ₹500*0.18 GST = ₹500 + ₹90 = ₹590. 2) Cooking — rice 1 cup serves 4; ratio. 8 people = 2 cups. 3) Travel — distance, time, fuel. Hyderabad to Vizag 600 km; 80 km/h speed; 7.5 hours. 4) Bank — savings interest — Simple Interest = P × R × T / 100. ₹10,000 × 8% × 5 yrs = ₹4,000 interest. 5) Sports stats — cricket bat avg, run rate, strike rate.

Number tricks

1) Sum 1-100 — Gauss method: (1+100) × 50 = 5050. 2) Multiplication by 11 — 25×11: 2_(2+5)_5 = 275. 35×11: 3_(3+5)_5 = 385. 3) Times 5 — half then × 10. 86 × 5 = 86/2 × 10 = 430. 4) Squares 5x — N²: N×(N+1) then add "25." 35² = 3×4 = 12, +25 = 1225. 5) Divisibility — by 3 if digit sum divisible 3 (537: 5+3+7=15÷3). By 9 same with 9.

Number systems

1) Decimal (base 10) — daily. 2) Binary (base 2) — computers; 0,1. 3) Octal (base 8) — older computing. 4) Hexadecimal (base 16) — colors web; 0-9, A-F. RGB #FF5733.

Indian achievements

1) Sun Yat Sen 5th century — sun-wheel decimal symbols. 2) Brahmagupta 7th c. — zero arithmetic rules. 3) Bhaskaracharya 12th c. — calculus precursor; Lilavati. 4) Madhava 14th c. Kerala — infinite series (Newton-Leibniz precursors). 5) Ramanujan modern. 6) Manjul Bhargava — Fields Medal 2014.

Calculator etiquette

1) Not for basic math — 7+8=15 or 9×6=54 — mental. 2) For percentages, square roots, complex — calculator OK. 3) Always estimate before calculating — avoid silly errors.
