The next decade of AI. AGI (Artificial General Intelligence): AI as capable as a human at most cognitive tasks. Sceptics point to limits — common sense, multi-step reasoning, embodied skills — that current architectures struggle with. The honest summary: nobody knows exactly when, but many serious researchers expect AGI within this decade. Alignment: ensuring AI systems do what humans want, especially as they become more capable. The central technical and philosophical challenge. Anthropic's mission is centred on this; OpenAI Superalignment team; DeepMind has a similar effort. The work is hard because human values are complex, sometimes contradictory, and culture-specific. Governance: how nations and the world regulate AI.
