Cloud Migration
The process of moving applications, data, and workloads from on-premises infrastructure to cloud environments.
Also: lift and shift
Definition
Cloud migration is the process of moving digital assets — applications, databases, IT processes, and infrastructure — from on-premises data centers to cloud environments. Migration strategies are often described as the 6 Rs: Rehost (lift and shift), Replatform (lift and optimize), Repurchase, Refactor (re-architect), Retire, and Retain. Successful migration requires careful planning for data transfer, application dependencies, network connectivity, security, compliance, and training.
Example
“A retailer migrates its on-premises ERP system to Azure, reducing data center costs by 60% while gaining scalability for seasonal traffic spikes.”
