IP Address

USUK

A unique numerical label assigned to each device connected to a computer network.

Also: IP

Definition

An IP (Internet Protocol) address is a unique string of numbers separated by periods (IPv4) or colons (IPv6) that identifies each computer using the Internet Protocol to communicate over a network. IPv4 addresses are 32-bit numbers expressed in dotted-decimal notation (e.g., 192.168.1.1), while IPv6 uses 128-bit hexadecimal addresses to support a far larger address space. IP addresses serve two primary functions: host or network interface identification and location addressing.

Example

When you type a website URL, your router uses the IP address 93.184.216.34 to locate and connect to that web server.
