Network Protocol

USUK

A set of rules governing how data is transmitted and received across a network.

Definition

A network protocol is a standardized set of rules that determine how data is transmitted between different devices in the same network. Protocols define the format, timing, sequencing, and error control of data transmission. Common protocols include HTTP/HTTPS for web browsing, SMTP for email, FTP for file transfer, and SSH for secure remote access. Protocols operate at specific layers of the OSI or TCP/IP model.

Example

HTTPS is the protocol your browser uses to securely request and receive web pages from a server, encrypting all data in transit.
