The principle of meeting present needs without compromising future generations' ability to meet their needs. The concept of Nachhaltigkeit originated in German forestry management in the 18th century (Hans Carl von Carlowitz, 1713) — long before the 1987 Brundtland Report. Germany has made sustainability a cornerstone of its Agenda 2030 and Green Deal commitments.
