The policy of acquiring and maintaining control over another country. Spain was a major colonial power (15th–19th centuries) controlling most of Latin America, the Philippines, and parts of Africa and Asia. The Spanish Empire's legacy — language, religion, culture — profoundly shaped two continents. India also endured colonial rule, giving the two nations shared historical experiences.
