Definition
The official national language of Malaysia, Brunei, and the main language of Indonesia (as Bahasa Indonesia). Malay is an Austronesian language with around 290 million speakers globally. Historically, Malay was the lingua franca of Southeast Asia's maritime trade routes, and the Malay script (Jawi) was widely used alongside Romanized Rumi.
