The act of leaving one's country to settle in another. Poland has a long emigration tradition — the Great Emigration after the 1830 uprising sent Poland's intellectual elite to Paris. After EU accession (2004), over 2 million Poles migrated to the UK, Ireland, and Germany — one of Europe's largest peacetime migrations. The Polish diaspora (Polonia) worldwide numbers about 20 million people.
