saudade

A uniquely Portuguese and Brazilian emotional concept describing a deep, melancholic longing for something or someone beloved but absent — a love for things that may never return. More than nostalgia, saudade combines absence with the pleasure of remembrance. It is the emotional core of Fado music and Portuguese national character, called 'the love that remains when the loved one is gone.'
