A Portuguese music genre characterized by mournful melodies and lyrics about fate, longing, the sea, and saudade. Recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (2011), Fado originated in Lisbon's working-class neighborhoods in the early 19th century. The greatest Fado performer, Amália Rodrigues (1920–1999), made it internationally famous. Fado means 'fate' in Portuguese.
