Definition

Jagat is the manifest world of moving and changing things, the entire phenomenal universe. In Advaita it is regarded as a superimposition upon Brahman.

Example

“जगन्मिथ्या ब्रह्म सत्यम्।”

In English: “The world is illusory, Brahman is real.”

Another example: “सर्वं जगत् ब्रह्मणि प्रतिष्ठितम्।”

Usage — When, Where & How

Vedic, Classical, and philosophical; the neuter noun 'world, universe', the whole moving, changing phenomenal realm (from the root gam, 'that which moves'). In Advaita regarded as māyā-projected appearance. Very common in cosmological and devotional contexts.
