English meaning: Ghazal (poetic form)

Definition

A form of poetry composed of couplets (sher) that follow a strict rhyme scheme and refrain (radif). Each couplet is independent in meaning but shares the same metre. Prominent Urdu ghazal writers include Mir Taqi Mir, Ghalib, Faiz Ahmad Faiz, and Gulzar.

Example

مرزا غالب اردو غزل کے سب سے بڑے شاعر ہیں۔

In English: Mirza Ghalib is the greatest poet of Urdu ghazal.
