A system of human communication. Vietnamese is a tonal Austroasiatic language with six tones. Modern Vietnamese uses a Latin-based script (Chữ Quốc Ngữ) developed by missionaries in the 17th century, replacing classical Chinese (chữ Hán). Vietnam recognizes 54 ethnic minority languages alongside Vietnamese as the official language.
