English Definition
A comprehensive performing art form combining singing, music, acting, acrobatics, and elaborate costumes. China has over 300 regional opera forms, of which Peking Opera (京剧) is the most prominent and a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Cantonese Opera, Kunqu, and Sichuan Opera are also celebrated traditions. Roles are classified as sheng (male), dan (female), jing (painted face), and chou (clown).
