English Definition

One of the cardinal Confucian virtues, meaning righteousness, moral rightness, and duty. Yi requires acting according to what is morally right regardless of personal gain. Mencius developed Yi as the natural expression of moral conscience. Along with Ren (benevolence), Yi forms the moral backbone of Confucian ethics and is central to Chinese notions of justice and social obligation.
