Telugu Consonants (హల్లులు / Vyanjanams)

— 36 consonants classically; modern Telugu uses 41 with special characters. 5-Group classification (Vargas) — by mouth position: (1) కంఠ్యం (Velars/Throat): క ఖ గ ఘ ఙ (k, kh, g, gh, ng); (2) తాలవ్యం (Palatals): చ ఛ జ ఝ ఞ (ch, chh, j, jh, ny); (3) మూర్ధన్యం (Retroflex): ట ఠ డ ఢ ణ (T, Th, D, Dh, N); (4) దంత్యం (Dentals): త థ ద ధ న (t, th, d, dh, n); (5) ఓష్ఠ్యం (Labials): ప ఫ బ భ మ (p, ph, b, bh, m). Each row 5 letters — pattern: unvoiced unaspirated, unvoiced aspirated, voiced unaspirated, voiced aspirated, nasal. Antastha (semivowels): య ర ల వ (y, r, l, v).
