Holi (హోళి)

— Hindu festival of colors; Phalguna Purnima (Feb-March); 2-day celebration: Day 1 Holika Dahan (bonfire night); Day 2 Rang Panchami (color play day). Origin Stories: (1) Prahlada-Hiranyakashipu: King Hiranyakashipu wanted son Prahlada killed (he refused to worship demon-king father, instead worshiped Vishnu); sister Holika (immune to fire blessing) sat on fire pyre with Prahlada; Holika burned, Prahlada saved by Vishnu. Hence "Holika Dahan" bonfire = burn evil; good triumphs. Narasimha avatar Vishnu killed Hiranyakashipu later — Yadagirigutta TS connection. (2) Krishna-Radha: Young Krishna jealous of Radha's fair complexion (he was dark/blue); Yashoda told Krishna apply colors on Radha; Krishna did playfully; tradition began in Vrindavan-Mathura UP. Most famous Holi — Vrindavan, Mathura, Barsana (Radha's village UP) Lath Mar Holi (women playfully beat men with sticks). Foods: gujiya (sweet dumpling), thandai, malpua, dahi vada.
