Quantum Mechanics

USUK

The physics governing behavior of matter and energy at atomic and subatomic scales.

Also: QM · quantum physics

Definition

Quantum mechanics is the fundamental theory of physics that describes the behavior of matter and energy at the smallest scales, including atoms and subatomic particles. It introduces concepts such as quantization of energy, wave functions, and the probabilistic nature of physical measurements. Quantum mechanics underlies modern technologies including semiconductors, lasers, and MRI machines.

Example

The transistors inside a smartphone rely on quantum tunneling, where electrons pass through energy barriers that classical physics says they cannot cross, enabling the switching action that makes computing possible.
