Magnetic Field

USUK

A region around a magnet where magnetic forces act on other magnets and moving charges.

Also: B field · magnetic flux density

Definition

A magnetic field is a vector field that describes the magnetic influence on moving electric charges, electric currents, and other magnets. It is produced by moving electric charges and intrinsic magnetic moments of particles. Magnetic fields are visualized as field lines and are measured in units of Tesla. They are fundamental to electromagnetism and technologies such as MRI, electric motors, and data storage.

Example

Iron filings sprinkled around a bar magnet align themselves along the magnetic field lines, forming a visible pattern that reveals the invisible field's shape from north to south pole.
