Polymer

USUK

A large molecule composed of many repeated smaller units called monomers.

Also: macromolecule

Definition

A polymer is a large macromolecule made up of many repeating structural units called monomers, linked together by covalent bonds. Polymers can be natural, such as DNA, proteins, and cellulose, or synthetic, such as nylon, polyethylene, and silicone. Their properties depend on the type of monomers, chain length, and degree of cross-linking, making them incredibly versatile materials.

Example

Polyethylene, the most widely produced plastic in the world, is made by linking thousands of ethylene monomers into long chains; it is used to make plastic bags, bottles, and food packaging.
