Gene expression is the process by which the information encoded in a gene is used to synthesize a functional gene product, typically a protein. It involves two main stages: transcription, in which DNA is copied into messenger RNA (mRNA) in the nucleus, and translation, in which ribosomes in the cytoplasm read the mRNA sequence and assemble the corresponding amino acid chain (protein). Gene expression is tightly regulated and determines cell identity and function.
