Nuclear Fusion

USUK

The process where light atomic nuclei combine to form a heavier nucleus, releasing energy.

Also: thermonuclear fusion

Definition

Nuclear fusion is a nuclear reaction in which two or more light atomic nuclei combine to form a single heavier nucleus, releasing a tremendous amount of energy as described by E = mc2 because the product nucleus has slightly less mass than the reactants. Fusion powers the Sun and all stars through the fusion of hydrogen into helium. On Earth, sustained controlled fusion remains an active research challenge that promises clean, virtually limitless energy.

Example

The Sun produces about 3.8 times 10 to the 26th power watts of energy by fusing approximately 600 million metric tons of hydrogen into helium every second in its core, where temperatures exceed 15 million degrees Celsius.
