Tectonic Hazards
Natural hazards resulting from the movement and interaction of tectonic plates.
Also: geohazards · seismic hazards
Definition
Tectonic hazards are geohazards resulting directly from the movement and interaction of Earth's tectonic plates, including earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, and landslides. They occur most frequently at plate boundaries—particularly convergent and transform boundaries—and can cause devastating loss of life and economic damage. Understanding tectonic hazards enables risk assessment, building code development, and early-warning systems.
Example
“The 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake triggered a massive tsunami when the Indian plate suddenly lurched beneath the Burma plate; the resulting waves killed over 230,000 people across 14 countries, prompting the establishment of an Indian Ocean tsunami early-warning system.”
