RACI
A responsibility assignment matrix defining Responsible, Accountable, Consulted, and Informed roles.
Also: RACI matrix · RASCI
Definition
RACI is a project and process governance tool that clarifies roles and responsibilities by mapping tasks or decisions to four role types: Responsible (who does the work), Accountable (who owns the outcome and signs off), Consulted (whose input is sought before decisions), and Informed (who is kept in the loop). In organizational design, RACI matrices prevent duplication, clarify ownership, and reduce decision bottlenecks, particularly in complex or matrixed structures.
Example
“When redesigning the recruitment process, the HR team created a RACI matrix that clarified the hiring manager was Accountable for the hiring decision, while HR was Responsible for sourcing and Finance was Consulted on budget approval.”
