Offboarding
The formal process of separating an employee from the organization.
Definition
Offboarding is the structured process of managing an employee's departure from the organization, whether through resignation, redundancy, retirement, or termination. It encompasses completing exit documentation, conducting exit interviews, revoking system access, recovering company property, processing final settlement (including any statutory payments), and facilitating knowledge transfer. A well-managed offboarding process maintains employer brand, supports the leaver's transition, and mitigates security and compliance risks.
Example
“The company's 10-step offboarding checklist ensured that when a senior engineer resigned, his system access was revoked within 24 hours, knowledge transfer was documented over three weeks, and the final settlement was processed in 10 working days.”
