Notice Period
The time an employee or employer must give before ending the employment relationship.
Also: notice · resignation notice
Definition
A notice period is the minimum duration that either an employee or employer must provide as advance warning before terminating the employment relationship. It is typically stipulated in the employment contract and may also be governed by labour law. During the notice period, the employee is expected to complete ongoing work, facilitate handover, and support knowledge transfer. Organizations may offer 'notice buyout' arrangements where the notice period is paid in lieu of being served.
Example
“The senior manager's contract included a three-month notice period, which the company waived by paying three months' salary in lieu of notice when they needed her to leave immediately.”
