BGP
Border Gateway Protocol — the routing protocol that manages how data is routed across the internet.
Also: Border Gateway Protocol
Definition
Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) is the standardized exterior gateway routing protocol used to exchange routing and reachability information among autonomous systems (AS) on the internet. BGP makes routing decisions based on paths, network policies, and rule sets configured by network administrators. It is the protocol that makes the internet work by enabling routers at major internet exchanges to share network reachability information. BGP is classified as a path-vector routing protocol.
Example
“When a large ISP announces a network outage, BGP automatically reroutes internet traffic through alternative paths within minutes.”
