OSI Model

USUK

A seven-layer conceptual framework that standardizes how different network protocols communicate.

Also: Open Systems Interconnection Model

Definition

The Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model is a conceptual framework that divides network communication into seven distinct layers: Physical, Data Link, Network, Transport, Session, Presentation, and Application. Each layer has specific responsibilities and communicates with the layers directly above and below it. The OSI model provides a universal language for describing network functions, helping engineers troubleshoot issues and design interoperable systems.

Example

A network engineer troubleshooting a connectivity issue checks the Physical layer first (cables) before moving up to Network (IP routing) and Application (HTTP) layers.
