A system of rules enforced by institutions, or a legitimate entitlement. Spain's legal system follows the Roman-Germanic civil law tradition, codified in the Civil Code (1889). Spanish law spread throughout Latin America via colonial rule, making it the foundation of legal systems in 20 countries. International law in Spanish (derecho internacional) is central to Latin American diplomacy.
