The state of being free from outside control. Poland regained independence on November 11, 1918 (National Independence Day) after 123 years of partition. November 11 is Poland's most important national holiday. The Second Polish Republic (1918–1939) lasted only 21 years before Nazi and Soviet invasion. Poland declared independence again in 1989 with the fall of communism — the Third Polish Republic.
