Cell Division
USUK
The process by which a parent cell splits into two or more daughter cells.
Definition
Cell division is the process by which a parent cell reproduces itself into daughter cells. In somatic (body) cells, this occurs through mitosis, producing two genetically identical diploid cells for growth and repair. In reproductive cells, it occurs through meiosis, producing four genetically unique haploid cells for sexual reproduction. Cell division is regulated by the cell cycle and its checkpoints.
Example
“When you cut your finger, skin cells near the wound undergo rapid mitosis, dividing repeatedly to replace damaged tissue and close the wound within days.”
