Mitosis

USUK

Cell division producing two genetically identical daughter cells for growth and repair.

Definition

Mitosis is a type of cell division in which a eukaryotic cell divides to produce two daughter cells that are genetically identical to the parent cell. It proceeds through four stages: prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase, followed by cytokinesis. Mitosis is essential for growth, tissue repair, and asexual reproduction in multicellular organisms.

Example

After a bone fracture, osteoblast cells near the break site undergo mitosis repeatedly, producing identical cells that lay down new bone tissue to repair the fracture over weeks.
