Performance Calibration
A process where managers align on performance ratings to ensure consistency.
Also: talent calibration
Definition
Performance calibration is a structured process in which managers across an organization or department review and align their performance ratings to ensure fairness, consistency, and objectivity. During calibration meetings, managers present their team ratings, discuss evidence of performance, and collectively adjust ratings to remove unconscious bias and ensure that the same standards are applied across all teams. It is a critical step before finalizing appraisals and making pay decisions.
Example
“During the calibration session, the HR business partner facilitated a discussion where one manager's entire team had top ratings, leading to a more balanced distribution aligned with actual performance evidence.”
