Belonging

USUK

The experience of feeling accepted, valued, and connected in one's workplace.

Definition

Belonging is the emotional experience of being accepted, included, and valued as an authentic member of a group or organization. While inclusion focuses on systems and practices, belonging is the subjective, felt outcome—the sense that one can show up as their true self without masking or code-switching. Organizations cultivate belonging through equitable practices, authentic leadership, meaningful recognition, and psychologically safe environments.

Example

The company's belonging index showed that employees from minority backgrounds scored 12 points lower on belonging than majority-group peers, prompting targeted interventions in team culture and management practices.
