Freedom from external domination. Vietnam declared independence from France on 2 September 1945, when President Ho Chi Minh read the Vietnamese Declaration of Independence, which opened with phrases borrowed from the US Declaration of Independence. The subsequent wars to achieve and protect independence shaped modern Vietnam's national identity.
